Case 54
Daniel Morcombe
*** Content Warning: child victim, child sexual assault ***
On December 7 2003, 13-year-old Daniel Morcombe set out from his home in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast to walk the one-kilometre journey to the nearby bus stop. He was planning to go to a local shopping centre to get a haircut and buy some Christmas presents for his parents. It was a trip Daniel made often, usually with his twin brother, Bradley.
But the bus Daniel planned to catch broke down, and he was left waiting alone for more than 30 minutes. When a replacement bus drove by, Daniel tried to flag it down but the driver didn’t stop. By the time another bus arrived just three minutes later, Daniel had disappeared.
